In California, this Back to the Future fan thought that hitting the magic speed of 88mph in a DeLorean would send him soaring into different times, but instead, it managed to trigger the cops.

The superfan thought that he’d take his new 1980s DeLorean for a spin, but thanks to a car in front stopping, he had to downshift and merge.

As a result, his car was flying, so he decided to take it to the next level.

But his speeding did have a costly consequence.

This Back to the Future fan thought that hitting 88mph would make time travel possible

Back to the Future is a movie that we all know and love, with the special DeLorean DMC-12 taking centre stage in the Hollywood production.

The DeLorean hits 88mph on the big screen and kickstarts the ability of time travel in the movie, but one superfan decided to test this theory for himself, in real life.

Thanks to his efforts, a man in California received a citation of almost $400 for reaching the magic speed in a DeLorean from 1982.

Spencer White had his mom in the car too as he took his new wheels for a spin, but he did more than cruise the highway.

He was driving at 86, but that number was almost at the level that enables time travel in the Hollywood film.

“I turned to my mom, who is 65, and said, ‘Want to take it up to 88?’ and she said, ‘Oh yeah, of course,’” he told ABC News.

He also remarked that as a kid, he would always tell his mum to ‘take it up to 88’ in the family car.

But, after his car ‘took off’ and hit the magic number, police pulled the Back to the Future fan over for hitting the high speed.

“I started laughing, and my mom was laughing harder than I was. The cop said, ‘Do you want to look at the radar gun? Do you want to take a picture?’ Which of course I did,” the fan continued.

Sadly, though, he did still receive a citation for his speed and admitted that the speeding was wrong.

An officer from the California Highway Patrol confirmed the incident and the money owed by the DeLorean owner.

“Hopefully, he got it out of his system, and he doesn’t continue to do it,” explained Officer Joshua Greengard.

It’s not all bad, though, as the speeder even thought about framing the ticket.

The DeLorean is the epitome of car royalty

When we think of all-time movie stars in the car world, Doc Brown’s DeLorean is a clear frontrunner.

The auto is loved by gearheads all over the world, with replicas even being made to keep up with demand.

For example, this DeLorean hadn’t seen the light of day since 1986, before a father and son team found it in Wisconsin, and it looked like it had been left by Marty and Doc.

Additionally, you can even take a look at the world’s first fire-breathing ‘Tesla Time Machine’, inspired by Back to the Future.
