California is the first state in America to have more EV chargers than gas pumps, and it’s by a large margin.
EV charging stations have rolled out at an impressive rate across the US.
And that’s particularly true in California, with the state investing billions to expand EV charging infrastructure via Clean Transportation Program investments.
Now, the state has more EV chargers than gas pumps, and that’s not even counting the hundreds of thousands of home chargers.

How EV charging stations compare to gas pumps in California
Across a relatively short period of time, EV charging stations have grown at a phenomenal rate in the US, with new Tesla Superchargers popping up all the time.
However, California is far and away the frontrunner when it comes to EV infrastructure.

So much so, it now has more EV chargers than gas pumps.
New figures from the California Energy Commission (CEC) revealed that the state has a whopping 201,180 fully public and shared electric vehicle charging plugs.
For some context, this means there are 68 percent more charging connectors than gas-pump nozzles.
And these figures don’t include the estimated 800,000 chargers installed in single-family homes in California.
“In the state of California, 94 percent of people now live within just 10 minutes of an EV charger,” Governor Gavin Newsom said.
He went on to say it was proof that ‘electric vehicles are here to stay’.
Most of the chargers are Level 2, but CEC says a growing number are fast chargers.
California has more registered EVs than any other state by a long way
When it comes to EV adoption, America is a bit of a mixed bag with some states snapping up electric vehicles and others happy to stick to their gas-powered ones.
As you might have guessed, California falls into the former group and has the most registered EVs of any state.

In fact, looking at a list of the most EV owners, California has as many registered electric vehicles as the next eight states combined.
As of July this year, there were a staggering 1,256,646 registered EVs, soaring ahead of Florida, which was in second place with 254,878.
So it really should come as little surprise that California has more EV chargers than gas pumps.
