California police who were looking for a stolen box truck unexpectedly found a Bugatti kit car in a cargo trailer.

The Sheriff’s Office in San Joaquin County shared the surprising discovery to its Facebook page.

That wasn’t all the cops found, though, as other stolen items included branded merchandise and stolen firearms.

But the Bugatti kit car was an obvious stand-out in this criminal haul.

The Bugatti kit car that took some California police by surprise

In their line of work, police deal with a surprising amount of cars.

Whether that’s seized supercars used as cop cars in Turkey or supercars joining Dubai’s police fleet, high-end cars are prominent in law enforcement duties.

But they also feature semi-regularly in criminal investigations.

You may recall that cops in Fresno, California, uncovered $3 million in stolen Dodge vehicles recently.

Across the pond, UK police tracked down 35 high-end cars that ended up in Thailand.

But sometimes the car comes as a surprise.

In the case of San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, it was on the search for a stolen box truck.

When the police finally tracked it down, they uncovered a whole array of looted items.

In a statement on its Facebook page, San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office explained what they found.

“After continuing to investigate last week’s case involving a stolen box truck, we have recovered even MORE stolen items.

“So far, we’ve been able to confirm a multitude of stolen FOX brand off-road merchandise, several stolen firearms, a stolen cargo trailer, and a stolen Bugatti Kit Car.

“Several additional subjects have since been taken into custody. The original arrestees still remain in custody,” they posted.

Where did it all come from?

Of all the items uncovered in the search, the Bugatti kit car is clearly the most interesting item.

It raised a lot of questions – how did this quirky car end up in the hands of a criminal gang?

The design is decidedly old school, certainly more Chitty Chitty Bang Bang than Fast & Furious.

At the initial time of the search, the police weren’t able to determine how much the haul was worth overall.

But we can’t imagine this endeavour was undertaken for chump change.
