This California YouTuber built a magical drive-in theatre deep in the forest just for his friends.

YouTuber Mellow_Conner wanted somewhere he and his pals could watch Top Gear in peace.

There’s no question that this sounded like an awesome idea – but would they be able to get their projector equipment and camping gear up into the mountains in a lowered Honda S2000 car?

Would this movie night be a dud or a bonding experience to remember?

This California YouTuber made a drive-in theatre in the forest

California YouTuber Mellow_Conner wanted to do something special for himself and his friends.

As big Top Gear fans, they wanted to watch the episode where the gang went to Vietnam – widely considered to be one of the show’s best episodes.

But this wasn’t going to be a standard guys’ night in.

No, they wanted to watch it out in the California wilderness with their own drive-in theatre set-up.

But with just a lowered S2000 car to transport all the camping gear and projector equipment up into the mountains, could it be done?

After driving 100 miles for a coffee, surely this excursion would be a piece of cake, right?

Well, a journey on a hot day without air conditioning doesn’t sound like our idea of a good start.

Along the way, they dealt with some unfortunate bumps in the road – a leaky car exhaust, poor road quality, and unexpected rain.

But when they finally found their ideal spot, it was perfect.

There were still some teething issues to work through, like the screen being a little too bright at first.

But once everything was set up, this was second to none.

Watching Top Gear in the woods may not be what the BBC had in mind when it produced the show.

But maybe it’s the rest of us who are missing a trick.

We all love a movie experience with a difference, right?

Something about a drive-in movie theatre just screams America, doesn’t it?

Unfortunately, there are fewer of them around nowadays.

At their peak in the mid-20th century, there were around 4,000 drive-in movie theatres in the US.

Nowadays, the figure is closer to 300.

But the ones that are still around are just as special.

A Pennsylvania couple found the drive-in movie theater was still a money maker after they took out a $1 million loan to buy one, which now earns them $550,000 a year.

And pop stars are getting in on the act, too, like Sabrina Carpenter.

Are we entering a drive-in theatre renaissance? We’ll have to wait and see.
