CarMax responds after Virginia woman takes Tesla Cybertruck for appraisal and she receives an offer that she never expected

A Virginia woman was left shocked after she took her Tesla Cybertruck to CarMax in Virginia.

The YouTuber, EV & Chill, wasn’t actually planning to sell her truck, but she wanted to see what kind of offer she would receive.

She had a figure in mind that she thought would be realistic for a Cybertruck with 14,000 miles on the clock.

What she got back was surprising.

The Tesla Cybertruck appraisal went viral

EV & Chill decided to take her Cybertruck EV to CarMax after owning it for around a year.

The truck was described as being in good condition. It was an all-wheel-drive model and had new BFG tires as well as a wrap.

The wrap was one of the things she was particularly interested in because there is often debate over whether modifying a vehicle can affect its resale value.

In her case, she believed the wrap actually helped the Cybertruck’s appearance.

Before arriving at CarMax, she had already worked out roughly what she thought the truck might be worth.

She was expecting an offer somewhere between $57,000 and $60,000.

That seemed like a reasonable figure to her, particularly given the truck’s mileage and the fact that she wasn’t actually trying to sell it.

But the appraisal didn’t quite go according to her expectations.

CarMax’s offer was high enough to leave her genuinely surprised, especially because the company hadn’t even taken the Cybertruck for a test drive.

The number CarMax came back with was $66,000.

The result quickly attracted attention online, with the appraisal becoming the subject of a viral story.

And eventually, CarMax itself responded.

CarMax offered $66,000 – but what is the Cybertruck worth now?

That was between $6,000 and $9,000 more than the figure EV & Chill had expected, making it a considerably stronger offer than she had anticipated.

“I was not expecting that,” she said.

The offer was also interesting because the creator wasn’t actually intending to sell the Cybertruck, but instead, the appraisal gave her an idea of what a major used-car retailer thought her truck was worth.

CarMax subsequently responded to the video, telling Supercar Blondie it was glad the customer was pleased with the offer.

A spokesperson said: “We’re happy to hear this customer was pleased with her appraisal offer!”

The company explained that its appraisal process involved an associate reviewing the vehicle, followed by a trained buyer evaluating the information.

CarMax said it combined vehicle data with human experience when determining its offers.

But the Tesla Cybertruck market has moved since the original story was published, so how does that $66,000 figure look today?

As of August 2026, Kelley Blue Book lists a current resale value of $72,400 for a 2024 Tesla Cybertruck All-Wheel Drive, while its trade-in value is $68,700.

That means the old CarMax offer of $66,000 was below today’s estimated trade-in value by around $2,700, and roughly $6,400 below the current estimated resale value.

There are also plenty of used Cybertrucks currently being advertised around the $70,000-$80,000 mark, depending on the model, mileage and condition.

Current listings include 2024 AWD examples priced at $76,839, $78,630 and $79,999.

Interestingly, Tesla has also just increased the price of two new Cybertruck variants by $5,000, with the dual-motor model now starting at $74,990 and the all-wheel-drive version at $84,990.

So while $66,000 initially seemed like an unexpectedly generous offer, today’s figures suggest the Cybertruck has settled into a used market where a clean example can still be worth around the low-$70,000s.

For EV & Chill, that makes the original CarMax appraisal look pretty interesting in hindsight.
