A man in eastern China was so fed up with his daily commute that he took matters into his own hands and painted over the road markings to suit his journey.

This unique incident took place back in 2017 in Lianyungang, a city in China’s Jiangsu province

While this was really a bold move by the man, it landed him a fine of 1,000 yuan (about US$150) after police caught him altering the signs.

China man painting the road signs to ease his commute

This amazing story was covered by Modern Express at the time.

The man (unnamed) had a can of white paint and a paint brush, and he started to paint the road signs one day, even while the roads were busy with vehicles.

He changed the arrows in a lane that told cars to turn left, making them point straight ahead instead.

He did this because the lanes going straight were always crowded, while the left-turn lane was mostly empty.

However, his actions didn’t go unnoticed.

The man was soon tracked down by the police, and when confronted, he initially kept quiet about his motives.

However, later he spilled about his plans to make his commute smoother.

Restoring the signs back

The man revealed how he was irked by the constant traffic jams in the straight lane, pushing him to take such drastic measures.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time someone has taken road signage into their own hands.

Unlike this man, an artist once helped millions of Los Angeles drivers by creating his own freeway sign, greatly improving navigation.

Similarly, to enhance road safety, Australian authorities introduced glow-in-the-dark lines on some highways, making night driving safer and more efficient.

Fortunately, the road signs were soon restored to their original state, probably taking a toll on the man’s frustration again.
