Chinese LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) maker, Hesai, has just got a $40 million order from an unnamed US robotaxi company.

This is the second large deal Hesai has made with a US-based company, boosting Hesai’s credibility in the Western Robotaxi world by hinting at total confidence in its technology, reliability, and ability to scale.

While we don’t know which US company has made such a big deal, the sheer size of the order shows that the company clearly needs hardware at scale, rather than still being in the pilot testing stage.

This deal raises a lot of questions, and not a huge number of answers, but it shows that Hesai is establishing itself as the LiDAR provider to beat.

Chinese LiDAR maker Hesai and unnamed US robotaxi company make a deal

It seems that it is very popular to start a Robotaxi or autonomous car company at the moment, with Tesla and Zoox throwing their hats in the ring, following in the footsteps of Waymo.

But it has been revealed that an unnamed US robotaxi company has made a deal with the Chinese LiDAR maker.

The deal is worth over $40 million and shows that this Robotaxi company has confidence in Hesai as its sole LiDAR supplier.

This isn’t just a small deal; a deal this size shows that the US Robotaxi company is looking for hardware at scale, potentially for a big launch, rather than a small pilot test rollout.

This isn’t Hesai’s only US-based deal

This is the second US deal that that the Chinese innovator has made this month alone, which boosts the company’s credibility in the Western Robotaxi world.

The deal with the unnamed company has a planned delivery by the end of 2026, showing that this company is planning operations or scaling around that timeframe.

The demand for multi-range LiDAR is rising consistently, so if you decided to start a LiDAR developer company about five years ago, you may well be a millionaire by now.

While we don’t know which company made this deal, whether it is already an established brand or a new one looking to make waves, we do know that it’s good to be Hesai right now.
