The internet often appears to have a better insight into our minds than we have about ourselves, but there’s actually a way to find out exactly what Google knows about you, as this woman reveals a savvy hack.

Cookies, cache, data, ads, they all combine to give the tech gods a rich bank of information about you.

But has it reached a point where the algorithm knows too much about our likes and tastes, with a knowledge bank that borders on the line of being scary?

Well, this one woman has revealed a trick to show exactly what Google knows about you, and what data it stores.

Brands have been tracking data for years, using what they gather to ‘optimize’ their platforms for each individual.

But to what extent this data is used, and even where your details end up, can feel overwhelmingly dystopian and totalitarian, like George Orwell’s 1984 with ‘Big Brother’.

One woman has now gone viral for showcasing where you can find what Google holds on you, and it’s ‘scarily accurate.’

In a video from 2021, TikTok user yorgoandlea revealed that you can search ‘Ads Settings Google’ and the first result brings up a bank of information that it has on you.

From your age and location, to homeowner status and parental situation, and your favorite brands, there’s a wealth of information that it stores to give you personalized ads.

“Ads are based on personal info you’ve added to your Google Account, data from advertisers that partner with Google, and Google’s estimation of your interests,” Google said.

But the feature can be disabled, and it reverts your ads back to stock and paid-for brands.

Testing out Google’s ‘scary’ data bank

In a test over the last two hours, we used a new account to see how quickly it processes the data, and already it understands that the user is a 25-34 year old male in a relationship without children and interested in motor vehicles, mobile phones and accessories, and technology in businesses.

Damningly factual.

We’re not the only people to test it. Taking to the comments of her now-deleted TikTok video, users revealed how much was actually correct.

“Oh God. I tried it – the amount of information!” one person said.

“It’s scarily accurate,” added another.

Some people reported that their personalized ads were miles off, particularly with the age, but maybe some people are old before their time, googling knitting patterns and ‘How to play dominoes’.
