Connecticut’s newest roundabout has left its drivers baffled.

The traffic system can be difficult for some cars at the best of times.

But this latest roundabout has left locals completely stumped.

And it means that engineers had to come up with a new design.

Americans struggle with roundabout concept

Being a car driver involves facing a lot of obstacles.

Curveballs often include intersections, highways, and parking lots.

But there is one that tends to confuse American drivers more than others.

And that system, of course, is the roundabout.

Most drivers across the globe are extremely familiar with the roundabout.

Granted, it can still be difficult, but most people can use it fairly simply.

It allows drivers to give way to traffic while going on their way.

For some reason, however, there is one country where the roundabout has never been popular.

And that country is the United States.

Historically speaking, Americans are much more used to using signed intersections.

But the roundabout has been gradually rolled out across the country.

And Connecticut’s the latest state to receive the new traffic system.

Connecticut’s bumpy introduction to the new system

So, how have Connecticut’s drivers taken to the new system?

Well, not that well so far.

Most of West Hartford’s drivers did not immediately grasp how to use the roundabout.

With no distinct island in the middle, some drivers simply plowed through as if it were a normal intersection.

Others drove through as if it were a four-way intersection, just without the signs.

This, as you might imagine, led to some extremely close calls with other cars.

Thankfully, some drivers did actually use the roundabout as intended.

At this point, you might be asking yourself something.

How have Connecticut’s lawmakers addressed the danger and confusion?

It turns out that the solution lies… in putting traffic cones on the roundabout itself.

The idea behind this simple solution actually makes a lot of sense.

Connecticut’s officials believe the cones will act as a reminder to go around the middle.

The problem with this is that it sort of diminishes the point of having a flat center to begin with.

Larger vehicles are meant to be afforded more space to move around.

But the state’s officials hope that this turns out to be the solution to the problem.
