An American school bus reborn as a tiny home might sound quirky, but this English couple made it feel surprisingly practical.

It wasn’t an easy feat; they had to ship it all the way across the Atlantic, making it really expensive.

The costs involved meant that every inch inside the bus needed to earn its place.

Despite some initial doubts, the duo somehow made it work.

An American school bus is a national icon

Featured by YouTuber Roman Exploring, the couple sourced their 2008 International school bus from New York and had it transported to Baltimore before making the journey across the ocean.

The voyage took around 12 days, and the duo was equally excited and anxious as they waited for their tiny home on wheels to safely arrive in England.

Once it landed, the real challenge began.

At 33 feet long, the bus was far from ideal for the UK’s narrow roads, yet the owner found it surprisingly easy to handle.

Careful route planning became part of the routine, especially when heading to campsites.

While a few locations turned them away due to size constraints, many welcomed the bus with enthusiasm.

In fact, lots of people were drawn to its unmistakable American character.

Inside, the transformation reflected a balance of creativity and practicality.

The front section doubled as a living and sleeping area, with a dinette that converted into a small double bed.

In the kitchen, they skipped a traditional oven, relying instead on a microwave, air fryer, and two-burner setup, which suited their lifestyle just fine.

Storage solutions were thoughtfully designed, with soft-close drawers that stayed shut even on the move.

When you observed the interior carefully, you could tell that comfort was clearly a priority for the couple.

An electric fireplace added warmth and atmosphere, while a Truma heating system ensured the bus remained cosy in the colder months.

The couple had initially worried about power consumption, but the insulation proved effective enough to keep energy demands under control.

This tiny home wasn’t as expensive as you may think

The build itself took around six months of intensive work.

Over time, the layout continued to evolve based on real-world use, with one of the most notable features being the walk-through bathroom that maximized space without compromising comfort.

Power came from a 300-amp battery setup, with plans to upgrade to lithium and eventually install solar panels.

A 150-liter fresh water tank supported daily needs, with room for expansion if required.

In total, the project cost roughly £28,000 to £30,000 ($37,000 to $39,600), including the purchase, shipping, and conversion.

For a fully customized home on wheels, it proved to be a surprisingly attainable dream.

But why exactly did the couple from the UK choose an American school bus?

“We’ve been to America a lot, and we know they’re sort of iconic. The English people love them,” he said.

“We saw one near our house a couple of years ago, and I started looking into it then. It was just something we thought would make a great motor home.”

Interestingly enough, the couple isn’t alone, as old American school buses are apparently extremely popular as a blank canvas for mobile living.

However, few have gone to the lengths of actually shipping an entire bus overseas.
