After fixing up an abandoned superyacht and vowing to ‘never live on land again’, the Onboard Tangaroa couple, Blaine and Janis, have revealed what it’s been like up to their first 700 nautical miles.
House prices and rent are at an all-time high around the world, with everyone’s economy having felt the effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
But what if there was a way to have a comfy bed, more free food than you could imagine, and the best views that you could ever dream of, without bricks and mortar?
Well, that’s the dream of Blaine and Janis, who have been living it large on the coast of Canada, running the ‘Great Siberian Sushi Run’ all the way to Japan.

Life at sea: plain sailing or a washout?
Blaine and Janis bought this wreckage of an abandoned superyacht last year, saving up $200,000 CA (roughly $143,000 US) to leave their home and spend life offshore.
In the few months that they’ve owned it, they’ve overcome a number of hurdles, including a massive paint job that took all their might to save the aluminum hull.
But having poured blood, sweat, and tears into the renovation of the vessel, it’s just completed its first big adventure.
After 700 nautical miles, it’s currently docked in Anyox, Canada, and it’s given the couple a chance to give their followers an update.

In a new upload to their YouTube channel, Blaine revealed that there is still a lot of work to be done on the abandoned superyacht, but it’s proving to be a worthy investment.
Problems with the transmission shift, gird heaters, propellers, and crankcase have proved to be tricky, so far, but they remain optimistic that these can all be sorted by Blaine’s engineering experience.
“Things are working pretty well now, and I’ve been really happy with it,” Blaine said.
Now, they are planning to set sail again in a bid to make Onboard Tangaroa the best home-loved superyacht on the water.
Future plans for the abandoned superyacht overhaul
First off, the couple recently vowed that this was their forever home, promising to stay at sea for as long as they possibly can – maybe until the upkeep proves too much to handle with age.
Now, they intend to take it to Japan in its first journey, running from Alaska through Canada, Siberia, and Eastern Asia before getting down to the Sushi capital.
All the while, they can catch as many salmon as they can dream of.

After that, who knows? Not even the couple can decide where to take their ‘abandoned superyacht’.
But, when the world is your oyster (and there are plenty of them to fill their bellies), Onboard Tangaroa has many adventures in its future.
