Dodge might be about to do something it hasn’t done in years.
A low-cost, entry-level sports car.
The kind of lightweight, driver-focused model usually owned by Mazda and Toyota.
And if it lands under $30,000, it wouldn’t just join that space – it would put the Miata and GR86 directly in its sights.
What Dodge said about a sub-$30,000 sports car
The comments came from Dodge CEO Matt McAlear at the New York Auto Show, where he kept coming back to one idea – affordability still matters.
He said there’s ‘absolutely a market’ for something cheaper, especially if it still delivers ‘style, attitude, and performance.’
That’s a big shift from where the brand sits now.
The marque’s most affordable performance car, the Charger with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six, starts just under $50,000.

Dropping nearly $20,000 below that would push Dodge into a completely different segment.
Because of that, this wouldn’t just be a cheaper model.
It would be going directly after lightweight, driver-focused cars.
But Dodge hasn’t confirmed anything.
McAlear stopped short of committing, saying the brand can’t ‘confirm or deny’ whether a project is in development.
At the same time, he made it clear Dodge wants more affordable cars that still feel like proper performance models.
He described it as going ‘back to the basics’ – not cheaper for the sake of it, but rethinking what an entry-level car should actually offer.

This would signify a big shift for the brand
If it happens, this would mark a clear change in direction.
Dodge has spent years focusing on bigger power and higher price points, with even its newer models sitting well above entry-level territory.
At the same time, affordable sports cars have become a smaller part of the market, with SUVs and crossovers dominating sales.
That’s exactly why cars like the Miata and GR86 have held their ground – there isn’t much direct competition.

So while nothing is confirmed yet, the brand even considering this space suggests it sees an opportunity.
And if it follows through, this wouldn’t just be a cheaper Dodge.
It would be a completely different kind of Dodge.
