One unlucky driver was left confused at the wheel after they spotted an unusual road sign.

The sign resembled a race flag or chessboard, but on a much bigger scale.

Unsure as to what it was actually meant to resemble, they enlisted help online from fellow car fans.

And, as you’d expect, it ignited a huge discussion between many enthusiasts who had spotted it themselves.

When you hit the open road, there are signs to keep you safe

Driving can be a risky business, but luckily for those sitting behind the wheel, there are often indications in the form of signs that help distinguish potential dangers or changes.

From speed limit signs to the classic stop sign, across the world, these can look different thanks to various laws and highway codes.

But one driver was left baffled after spotting one sign that they had not come across previously.

Taking to social media, the driver, Spacey003, stated:

“I literally had to look up this sign have never seen it before. Has anyone seen this elsewhere?”

The sign consisted of what appeared to be a black and white board next to a road, across the pond in the UK.

Black and white road signs are not uncommon, with similar signs being used near roundabouts or country roads.

But what does the road sign actually mean?

The sign caused lots of discussion online after the driver asked fellow gearheads and those in the know.

“It basically means a sharp deviation/warning. It’s meant to highlight that the road doesn’t continue straight, and it’s a give way,” suggested one person.

“They don’t put up a sign like that until several cars have flown straight across the T junction and into the field beyond,” said another user.

“Not strange at all. It’s been at the junction for years. It’s to catch your attention in what appears to be a long straight road, and alert you that there is, in fact, a junction for you to stop at,” added a third.

Well, it turns out that it’s not a regulatory sign, but rather a type of hazard marker.

It could also be used at the end of a road to let traffic know that a left or right turn is necessary, as there is no route ahead.

The more you know, right?
