Imagine trying to drive while someone constantly shines a flashlight in your face. That’s exactly how LED headlights feel to someone with astigmatism.
Astigmatism is a common vision problem that makes it difficult to see clearly.
For drivers with this condition, LED headlights can create severe discomfort due to their intense glare.
Now one sufferer is trying to shed light on the issue.

Driver with astigmatism struggle with LED headlights
In a recent TikTok video, Tahoma (@realtahoma), who has astigmatism, shared her frustration with LED headlights.
The video quickly went viral, gaining more than 534,000 views as she expressed her discomfort while driving.
@realtahoma these new cars headlights need to be investigated by USDOT like my astigmatism cant keep doing this 😭 #codeswitching #leaedu #floptok #morovaeofficial #tahoma #realtahoma ♬ Angle Grinder (Power Tool Electric Disc Side Hand Held Handheld Grinding Cutting Metal Construction Noise Clip) [Sound Effect] – Finnolia Sound Effects
“I’m losing my s**t right now,” Tahoma says in the video, pointing out the blinding headlights of a vehicle trailing behind her.
Expressing her discomfort, the caption on her post read, ‘these new cars headlights need to be investigated by USDOT like my astigmatism cant keep doing this’.
And it turns out she’s not alone in her frustration.
A Change.org petition advocating for banning blinding headlights has already garnered more than 67,000 signatures.
The Soft Light Foundation, which supports this movement, argues that the switch to LED headlights has led to dangerous glare, making driving unsafe.
Others with the same problem weigh in
Viewers commented on the video, expressing similar frustrations.
One user said they got so annoyed that they sometimes, ‘use my mirrors to reflect the light back at them’.
Another said ‘so I’m not crazy’, acknowledging their shared discomfort.
Another viewer blamed car manufacturers, saying, ‘this is 90 percent the car manufacturers’ fault. This should not be the default lighting for a new truck. Angle the beams down before selling trucks’.
While brighter headlights are beneficial for improving road visibility, they have their own disadvantages, especially for drivers with astigmatism.
Let’s hope manufacturers can find a balance between improved lighting and minimizing harmful glare.
