Tesla drivers reveal the ‘holy grail’ method of charging their EVs

EV drivers are praising the money-saving ‘holy grail’ method of charging their cars that is the ‘best and most convenient’ option.

As all-electric vehicles grow in popularity, so does the number of EV charging stations across the United States. 

According to data from the US Department of Energy, 64 percent of Americans live within two miles of a public charging station. 

However, EV owners also have the super-convenient option of charging at home and it turns out there’s one method that’s better than the rest.

New electric vehicle owner asked for advice on home charging

Those considering making the switch from a gas-powered car to an EV have plenty of pros and cons to consider. 

But one huge plus point for electric cars is the lower fuel costs – one EV owner revealed he saved around $12,000 after traveling 100,000 miles, while this Tesla owner shared how much a whole year of charging at home cost him and it was probably less than you think. 

Over on Reddit a new EV driver asked for some advice on charging their vehicle at home. 

“I recently purchased an EV and am thinking about having a charger installed in my home,” they wrote. 

“More for convenience than anything.”

Fellow EV drivers were quick to recommend installing a home charger but suggested fitting a Level 2 (L2) EV rather than a Level 1 (L1) charger. 

The L1 charger uses a 120V outlet and won’t charge an EV as quickly as the L2, which uses a 240V connection. 

In real terms – depending on the make and model of the car – an L2 can provide between 15 to 40 miles of range per hour, compared to an L1 that offers just three to five miles per hour.

Those who had already kitted out their houses with an L2 charger said they were super happy with the results. 

“I had a level 2 installed at home and the convenience is totally worth it,” one said.

“Charging level 1 at work in my ID.4 takes my entire 12-hour shift to get from about 63 percent to 80 percent. At home, that takes about an hour and a half.”

Others were quick to agree.

“Even if you don’t absolutely need it, there are advantages to Level 2: not only does your vehicle charge faster, it also charges more efficiently,” one person said. 

“You’ll spend about 10 percent less to charge your vehicle at Level 2 than at Level 1.”

Another commented: “240v is great because you can charge all the way up overnight before a trip and you can charge less often so it’s less work to plug in.”

Someone else in a separate thread about L2 charging that it ‘is the holy grail of EV life’.
