There’s a common myth floating around that EV charging doesn’t help the environment of our planet because power stations still burn fossil fuels.

This EV myth has been repeated for years, but it doesn’t hold up under scrutiny.

One TikTok tech expert is calmly setting the record straight and backing it up with facts.

Known as Mobula Ray EV (@mobula.ray.ev), the creator recently posted a video breaking down why this argument doesn’t hold up, especially in the UK.

Most of the UK’s electricity is from clean energy

In the clip, Mobula Ray addresses the common myth head-on: if electricity still comes from burning gas, how can EV charging be better for the environment?

Well, he started by highlighting a major milestone: in early 2023, British wind farms generated more electricity than gas did.

He continues by explaining that over 55 percent of the UK’s energy mix is now zero carbon, citing wind, solar, hydro, and nuclear as key contributors.

That means when most drivers plug in their EVs, especially at home, they’re relying on clean power, not coal or gas.

In fact, he notes that 80 percent of EV charging happens at home, often overnight, using tariffs that favour renewable energy.

That alone significantly lowers emissions compared to filling up a petrol car.

Plus, even in countries where fossil fuels dominate the grid, EVs remain more efficient and produce fewer harmful emissions overall.

Another EV myth debunked

Beyond just charging, the full lifecycle of an EV makes a difference, too.

While it’s true that building EV batteries consumes more energy upfront, a study has shown that EVs produce 73 percent fewer emissions than ICE vehicles over their entire lifespan.

This holds true even when compared to highly efficient petrol vehicles or hybrids.

In fact, experts have also debunked another common EV myth: that battery replacement is inevitable and expensive.

The fact that EVs may not need to replace their batteries as much as people think means that EVs are much better for the environment in the long run.

One viewer summed it up by pointing out that if you charge your EV with electricity made from coal, it still ends up being cleaner than most gas cars.

Others pointed out that this common myth doesn’t make a lot of sense, as many EV owners also use solar panels at home, reducing their carbon footprint even further.

In fact, an ingenious man even added a solar roof to his Tesla Model 3, ensuring he only uses clean energy wherever he goes.

Of course, if cost is not an issue, it’s official: hydrogen cars are the cleanest cars on the road, even compared to EVs.
