Some YouTubers pitted a fake Chinese Rolls-Royce against a Bentley in a suspension test, with a shocking result after proving its worth against the real thing.

In a world of ultra-luxury cars, you’d expect a Rolls-Royce and a Bentley to dominate every test, but in this showdown, they looked to see whether the fake version proved that we’re paying too much for luxury cars.

The non-luxury equivalent of the Rolls-Royce, often dubbed the Chinese Rolls-Royce, under scrutiny was the ‘Hongqi’.

Despite borrowing its design from a Rolls-Royce, the Hongqi is fully electric, far more affordable, and boasts serious performance credentials.

Fake Chinese Rolls-Royce took on a Bentley in a suspension test

Sometimes, when luxury cars get tested against their fake copycat equivalents, we find ourselves being pleasantly surprised by the display that the ‘fake’ version puts on.

This was certainly the case when one team of YouTubers decided to test a real-life Bentley against a car known as the Chinese Rolls-Royce – the Hongqi.

Although the Hongqi looks just like a Rolls-Royce, it’s its own beast entirely, and it was pitted against a real Bentley to see how it performed.

Both luxury cars drove over many tiny bumps to test the suspension of each vehicle, and they did it using something called the ‘glass test’.

It was a shock result after proving its worth against the real thing

The Hongqi went first, and looked like it glided over the bumps, with the wine glass full of water placed between the two passengers barely spilling a drop.

In the video, the Chinese Rolls-Royce was described as having the ability to ‘serve as a restaurant on wheels,’ implying near-stationary comfort when the cabin is experiencing some turbulence.

The Bentley, however, showed measurable water loss from the glass over the course of the test, which is surprising considering the ‘fake’ proved itself to be such a smooth ride.

The YouTubers described the Bentley as experiencing ‘chaos’ over the bumps, with an aggressive and less-controlled body motion than the Hongqi.

The Hongqi’s quirky multi-link suspension architecture really came in clutch, including its hydro bushings and air springs.

It shows that the legacy European brands can’t solely rely on badge recognition, and if they don’t carry on innovating, other, less well-known brands will come for their crowns – for a lot less cash.
