Ferrari one-offs are not just bold design exercises; they are fully functioning, factory-built cars crafted for the world’s most passionate collectors.

Unlike typical concept cars, they are commissioned by individual clients and tailored to their exact specifications.

Since launching its Special Projects program in 2008, Ferrari has turned dreams into reality by producing exclusive one-offs based on its road and racing models.

Each car is a unique blend of personal vision and Ferrari’s design and engineering excellence.

The Ferrari Special Projects program began in 2008

Exclusive Ferraris aren’t a recent development, evident by gems like this one-off Ferrari designed by Pininfarina 25 years ago.

However, it wasn’t until 2008 that the carmaker began releasing one-offs in a systematic manner.

The journey began with the 2008 Ferrari SP1, created in partnership with Japanese designer Ken Okuyama and based on the 599 GTB Fiorano.

It marked the start of Ferrari’s return to its coach-built roots.

In the early days of the brand, wealthy clients would commission Italian carrozzeria (coachbuilders) to provide unique designs for the Ferrari chassis.

The Special Projects program formalized this idea under factory control, initially working with external designers like Pininfarina.

It later transitioned to Ferrari’s in-house Design Centre under Flavio Manzoni from 2010 onwards.

One of the most celebrated examples is the 2009 P540 Superfast Aperta, inspired by a gold Ferrari featured in Federico Fellini’s Toby Dammit.

Built for American film producer Edward Walson, this exclusive Ferrari took 14 months to complete and was based on the 599 GTB platform.

Another standout is the SP12 EC released in 2012, created for musician Eric Clapton.

This car fused modern 458 Italia underpinnings with styling inspired by the 512 BB, which was one of Clapton’s all-time favorite Ferraris.

Each car reflects not only its client’s vision but Ferrari’s dedication to artistry, history, and engineering.

The latest Ferrari one-off was released in 2023

The newest addition to the Ferrari Special Projects list came in October 2023 with the Ferrari SP‑8.

The roofless roadster is derived from the F8 Spider platform, and designed by Flavio Manzoni’s Styling Centre for a Taiwanese client.

It retains the 3.9‑liter twin-turbo V8 that produces around 710 horsepower, yet sheds the folding roof entirely, necessitating a bespoke rear-end design

This latest exclusive Ferrari went on display at the Mugello Circuit, before making its way to the Ferrari Museum at Maranello.

As we approach almost two years since the Ferrari Special Projects, one has to wonder whether the next Ferrari one-off will be in Ferrari’ iconic red color.
