This Georgia mechanic did a very generous thing when he fixed a stranded driver’s car for free.

It was one act of kindness that he did back in the 1980s without expecting anything in return.

Sherwood Cooke Jr. was the mechanic at the heart of this story.

And all these decades later, the good deed still resonated with viewers.

This Georgia mechanic did a good deed and it’s heartwarming

Sherwood shared the story on the TikTok account for Royalty Auto Service, the Georgia repair shop that he owns.

As he and his wife were leaving the shop at the end of a long day, a man pulled up in his 1984 Chrysler Laser and explained that his vehicle was stuck in first gear.

With every other shop telling him he’d need an expensive new transmission, this left the man in quite a pickle.

For Cooke, the temptation would have been there to head off – it was the end of his workday after all.

But he stuck around and took a look under the hood.

He discovered that it wasn’t the transmission at fault – the linkage connecting the gear shifter to the transmission had come loose.

It took less than a minute to repair – and he did it for free, despite the man’s insistence on paying him for his time.

Later that month, Neal received a call from a woman asking for his mailing address.

Identity of the stranded driver revealed

This Georgia mechanic would late receive a letter from the driver – who was actually a rear admiral stationed nearby at Naval Submarine Kings Bay.

Rear Admiral A.F. Campbell lavished praise upon Neal in the letter, commending his customer service.

He was asking for permission to share the story in the base newsletter, meaning other navy members would know who to take their car to.

On TikTok, many people were touched by this story, and praised Neal’s generosity.

It’s always a nice thing to see when cars can bring people together.

One dad got to experience this firsthand when he found a note on his car while camping out at Yosemite.

There was the time this Chicago family spent countless hours restoring a 1965 Buick Riviera in what quickly became a family bonding experience.

Plenty of car restorations tug on the heartstrings, too, like this 100-year-old car that hadn’t been driven since 1957.
