OnStar systems reportedly worked wonders in Texas floods
Unfortunately, cars don’t do particularly well in extreme wet weather. And, when floods come around, many vehicles end up as aimless vessels swept up with the current.
But before its cars end up becoming unsafe in wet weather, General Motors’ fleet uses a savvy piece of kit to help drivers out.
Most modern GM vehicles are equipped with OnStar. And the telematics system has proven why it is so highly thought of in the recent Texas floods.
Coming in clutch, it’s been reported that the OnStar system has seen 4,000 of its customers get support during the floods. It’s even helped lead rescue efforts.

General Motors reported that the Crisis Mode feature onboard its vehicles was used to support owners caught in the Texas floods.
In particular, the service helped rescue one disabled elderly couple and a rideshare driver from New York who was escorting a young couple and their three-month-old baby.
How does Crisis Mode help GM Vehicles?
For the most part, GM reported that its main objective in 4,000-plus calls was directing drivers to safer routes to avoid flooded roads. But it also supplied WiFi assistance so families could connect with each other.
In the two main cases highlighted, however, particularly the elderly couple, OnStar helped find the car. It also liaised with the emergency services so they could arrive at their precise location.

While it may seem like an unnecessary feature to most drivers, this simple phone line device can really be a lifesaver in the most testing of times.
