In a bid to see if cars really become airborne, this heavyweight car content creator from Utah, HeavyDSparks, built a homemade helicopter from a ‘flying SUV’ and pushed it off a cliff to see if it’d fly.

If you had to build a flying car, you’d probably want a very powerful engine and a few million dollars to play with.

But not everyone has pocket change like that.

In this case, a homemade helicopter was created to see if cars could fly on a budget, and its first-ever test was getting thrown off a cliff.

This ‘flying SUV’ is actually a homemade helicopter, but can it fly?

Typically, cars are best when all four wheels are on the ground.

But as we enter a new era of tech, flying cars are becoming all the rage.

Still, these multi-million dollar creations are a bit out of reach for the average Joe, or the Heavy D in this case, and people have begun to experiment with different DIY creations.

In an ongoing series to see who can make the best all-around vehicles, this final chapter saw the mechanics make a flying car each.

With a behemoth propeller attached to the flying SUV, the team hurled it down a ramp and sent it soaring through the skies.

However, this was quite a Buzz Lightyear and RC story, as it was a case of falling with style, rather than flying.

The flying SUV soon plummeted into the ravine, albeit as the farthest scrapyard car in the contest.

While it didn’t make it to the other side – nobody truly expected it to – it made it further than its competitor and earned its owner a hefty $15k prize.

Can cars actually fly?

Both of these cars soon crashed to their demise, leaving a heap of aluminum in a cliffside canyon.

But, flying cars are becoming a thing of the present, rather than the future. And we’re not necessarily talking about those airplane creations with a car body.

There have been a number of cars that have been modded with jets to become airborne, such as the Mansory concept and the Rolls-Royce-powered hovercraft.

While HeavyDSparks and his homemade helicopter are some way off these beasts, its evidently becoming a closer possibility to build your own flying SUV.
