A Canadian taxi driver was the proud owner of the highest mileage muscle car in the world, a 1963 Plymouth Fury.
Joe Vaillancourt drove more than 1.5 million miles in his Fury, reaching the figure in the late 1990s.
It was only due to an unfortunate incident that the career of the Plymouth was cut short.
Now, this amazing car is undergoing refurbishment while retaining as much of the original components as possible.

The Plymouth accumulated over 1.6 million miles
In total, the muscle car drove an incredible 1,621,591 miles before Vaillancourt was forced to park the car.
The Plymouth achieved this figure back in 1999.
A video from Canada AM in 1999, uploaded onto YouTube by RetroTY, tells the story.
Vaillancourt started driving the car in the mid-1960s, not long after it was built.
As he was a full-time taxi driver, the Plymouth was rarely off the road.
Many believed that he had set a Canadian record by as much as 9,300 miles.
It wasn’t long after his milestone mileage was reached that the car was involved in an accident.
The accident saw Vaillancourt being run into by a truck, which sadly totaled the Plymouth Fury.
Vaillancourt survived; however, that wasn’t the end of the story, as actor Michael Barrett stepped in to save the beloved car.
The 1963 Fury underwent a complete restoration
With the story of the Plymouth so captivating and heartwarming, Barrett didn’t want to see the car scrapped.
Thankfully, Vaillancourt himself was very meticulous when it came to looking after and maintaining the muscle car.
It returned to his garage after each day of work, and he washed it by hand every day.
The slant-six engine under the hood of the car was also rebuilt six times.

Back in the 1960s, the engine produced 145HP and 215LB-FT of torque, and the transmission was a three-speed automatic.
There were also weekly oil changes and the removal of the doors to help air out the humidity.
The restoration of the Fury cost Barrett approximately $20,000.
The car is now located in the currently closed Domaine de Pohénégamook Museum Foundation, which is undergoing renovations prior to hopefully reopening.
For now, the car is tucked away, safe and sound, waiting to be displayed once again.
