London commuters will soon get a chance to ride on historic tube trains on the London Underground, starting in September 2025.
Transport for London, in association with the London Transport Museum, is running historic tube stock from the 1930s across the network. This will begin later in 2025.
The stock is restored to its original condition. This includes the seats and Art Deco features, with the cab also laid out as it was in the 1930s.
Following successful earlier runs, the iconic tube stock will take to the rails once again in September, and tickets will soon be available to purchase online.

Historic tube trains are a popular attraction in London
The historic tube trains run by the London Transport Museum are a very popular attraction in London when they operate.
The set is made up of four cars from 1938, finished in the Art Deco style that was made famous during the 1930s.
In September, the set will be running on the Metropolitan Line, and the museum is set to release tickets soon for those who wish to experience the retro stock.
Transport for London is running the trips to mark the Rail 200 celebrations in the UK.
The year 2025 marks 200 years of rail travel in the country.
Events are taking place nationwide to celebrate the landmark occasion.
These tube trips will form part of the celebration, remembering the pre-war days of the London Underground.
Steam engines have been used on historic London Underground excursions
The classic tube stock isn’t the only historic motive power that has been used on the London Underground.
In 2013, the city marked 150 years of the underground.
It did so by running historic steam traction for the first time in many years.
The locomotive in question was Metropolitan No.1.
This is a Metropolitan E Class steam loco and the only surviving member of its kind.
It travelled across the network using vintage stock, including some genuine Metropolitan Railway coaches that had been intricately restored.
Metropolitan No.1 itself was built in 1898 and is currently undergoing a cosmetic restoration for display.
Other steam excursions have also taken place on the network.
London Transport ran ‘Steam on the Met’ trips throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
How rare is classic London Underground tube stock?
London Underground historic tube trains from the late 1930s are quite rare.
The London Transport Museum set is the most famous, while another is located at the Epping Ongar Railway near London.
The Isle of Wight Island Line used 1938 tube stock for many years before it was eventually replaced in the 2020s with the Epping Ongar set, a former Isle of Man tube train.

The fact that any of these units have survived at all is remarkable.
For many, they were simply a normal part of everyday life.
Hopefully, Transport for London will continue to run its vintage tube trains for generations to come.
