If you’ve ever wondered how much fuel an F1 car burns, the numbers behind F1 fuel consumption are as wild as the racing itself.

These cars might be built for speed, but they’re engineered with efficiency in mind.

Even while pushing 1,000hp around a circuit at full throttle, F1 cars burn less fuel than you’d expect.

And with major rule changes coming, that efficiency is about to go next level.

How much fuel an F1 car burns per race, lap by lap

Under current rules, every car on the grid is limited to 242.5lbs of fuel per race.

That doesn’t mean they burn all of it, but it’s the maximum allowed.

Unlike your road car, F1 fuel consumption is measured by weight, not volume, because mass stays consistent even when temperatures change.

To put it in gallons: at 60F, that 242.5lb limit equals about 40 gallons.

In a race like the Australian Grand Prix – 58 laps around a 3.2-mile circuit – teams typically burn around 30.7 gallons, getting about 6.2mpg.

Why F1 fuel consumption is more efficient than it sounds

Sure, the amount of fuel a racecar uses might sound excessive, but remember: these cars push 1,000hp on 87-octane E10 fuel.

Thanks to advanced hybrid systems like the MGU-H and MGU-K, they hit over 50 percent thermal efficiency –nearly double that of a typical road car.

From 2026, F1 fuel consumption will change again, with new regulations, synthetic e-fuels, and more powerful electric motors replacing some of the combustion output.

While it may be true that these racecars burn a lot of fuel, in the world’s fastest sport, every drop is pushed to the limit.
