If you want to buy an EV like a used Tesla Model Y, options are becoming much more enticing due to some surprisingly affordable prices.

But the question is: how much do Tesla electric cars cost to own?

YouTuber Carwire recently uploaded a video going through how much he pays for a second-hand Tesla Model Y Long Range, including various factors such as finance, insurance, and maintenance.

The video provides an interesting insight into how much a used Tesla costs per month.

EV ownership is expected to be cheaper than a gasoline car

When the YouTuber bought the car, it had done just 75,000 miles and cost £22,000 ($30,040).

The cost of owning an EV is expected to generally be less than that of a combustion car.

Home charging, less maintenance, and government incentives can all help bring the cost down.

That is being helped thanks to the general fall in prices of these used EVs.

Back to the YouTuber, and he spent an additional £195 ($266) on the road tax for the car.

The YouTuber is spreading the cost of the car over 72 months, for £319 ($435) per month.

Insurance is another big cost factor, and with this Tesla, it came to £600 ($819) for the year.

Road tax is another factor with the used Tesla

Another financial consideration is the road tax for the EV.

In the UK, this YouTuber paid £195 ($266) for his road tax, while there was also a £425 ($580) ‘expensive car’ supplement to pay.

That is a supplement for cars over a certain price tag, and roughly converts to $580.

As you might expect, versus a car like a Ferrari, maintaining an EV is cheaper and easier.

This is because there are fewer things to do, such as oil changes.

So low are the maintenance costs that the YouTuber doesn’t list them in the video.

There are additional costs, too, such as subscriptions for just over $10 a month.

That provides data for the car for things such as maps and music streaming.

Charging at home only costs £5.25 ($7.17) for the YouTuber, too.

So it seems that a lot of the costs involved with owning an EV are not too hefty after all.
