Once strictly confined to the world of science fiction, flying cars are now becoming a reality, but have you ever wondered how much it costs to drive a flying car?

There are several companies, including Samson and Alef Aeronautics, that are currently taking reservations for their flying cars

And some makers have said they expect to start deliveries as soon as 2026.

However, when it comes to buying one, there’s a lot more to consider than just the asking price.

How much will flying cars cost?

As the name suggests, a flying car is one that you can drive along roads but also take up into the air.

The idea of flying cars has been around for decades, but in the last few years we’ve seen real technological advancements that mean we’re closer than ever to getting the chance to own one.

A handful of big names in the industry currently have reservations open meaning you can be one of the first people in the world to get yourself a flying car.

But, as you might expect, buying your very own personal flying machine won’t come cheap.

For starters, you’ll be spending anywhere between $200,000 and over $1 million to buy the car.

On the lower end of the price range, you’ll find the Samson Switchblade, which is expected to set you back $200,000, while Alef Aeronautics has an estimated purchase price of $299,999.

At the other end of the scale, you’ll find the Klein AirCar, which is set to go for between $800,000 and $1 million, and the Aeromobil 4.0, which could come with a price tag of between $1.3 and $1.6 million.

But the costs don’t stop there

The purchase price is just part of what you’ll need to fork out to get yourself up into the skies.

To drive a flying car on the road, you’ll only need a regular driver’s license, but if you want to fly it, which is sort of the whole point, then you’ll need to get a Private Pilot Certificate.

This typically costs between $14,000 and $25,000, but Samson says this can be reduced to between $7,000 and $8,500 if using your own plane (or flying car) for training.

Your flying car will also need insurance, too, which could cost you around $17,000 a year, according to the Daily Brit

Alongside that you’ll need to cough up for specialist parking facilities, which might cost as much as $13,000 per year.

And, like any other car, you’ll also need to purchase fuel and make sure it has regular maintenance.

So, how much does it cost to drive a flying car?

OK, so you’ve bought the car, you’ve done your training, you’ve got the proper insurance, and you’re all fueled up and ready to go, but how much will you have spent to get there?

An analysis from the Daily Brit found that it would cost around $705,531, which includes the price of the vehicle as well as all the additional costs.

Ouch.
