The latest vehicle carrier from BYD has just set sail for Europe, packed with thousands of Chinese EVs.

The giant ship has, named Xi’an, is making its first-ever international trip.

It’s transporting nearly 7,000 new energy vehicles, including affordable EVs bound for global markets.

This is a major milestone in BYD’s expansion plan, as it ramps up its global EV exports.

BYD’s latest carrier is a floating EV factory

The Xi’an isn’t just a ship – it’s a symbol of BYD’s global ambition.

At 656ft long and capable of holding 9,200 vehicles, it’s one of the largest RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) ships in the world.

Its maiden voyage to Europe is already making waves.

Onboard are two of BYD’s most important models for export: the Dolphin Mini (known as the Seagull in China) and the newly introduced Sealion 6 SUV – both designed to appeal to budget-conscious EV buyers.

Some of the cars are right-hand drive, hinting that BYD is also eyeing markets like Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

The Xi’an will stop in major European ports, including the UK, Italy, Spain, and Belgium, underlining BYD’s full-court press into the continent.

And this is just the beginning – BYD plans to launch eight of these mega-ships, enabling it to deliver up to 1 million EVs globally every year.

BYD is quietly dominating the global EV race

While traditional automakers are still catching up, BYD is already in overdrive.

It sold 4.27 million cars in 2024 and wants to increase that to more than five million by the end of 2025.

Australia is a case study in how quickly the brand is taking over – the Dolphin hatchback launched at just $29,990 and stunned the market, and the Sealion 7 SUV has already cracked the top five EVs sold in the country this year.

Even its Shark 6 PHEV ute – with 100km of electric-only range – made headlines by launching under $60,000.

Together, these models prove BYD isn’t just playing the game – it’s defining it.

And as BYD’s reach expands, the Xi’an is just the beginning of something much bigger.
