There are reportedly around 700 jets retired every year, and some of the old Boeing planes have been turned into something special.
From impressive hotels hidden deep within the jungle, to restaurants and even homes, the opportunities to jazz up old planes really are endless.
And, even though some planes go to scrap after lying in desert areas and then used for parts, it’s clear that the aircraft’s journeys are far from over.
In fact, you can still visit converted jets today, and one experience even involves taking a deep dive into the ocean.

Old Boeing planes have wild new lives after they retire
When a Boeing plane reaches the end of its time in the skies, there are many uses for the huge metal tubes.

Forget sending them to the scrap yard; some planes have a whole other life after they stop hitting the runway.
Some Boeing planes are stored in places such as the Mojave Desert before parts can be used when the jets are sent to be scrapped.
But, some have a whole other lease of life after too.
For example, deep in the jungle setting of Costa Rica, one Boeing jet has actually been turned into a hotel.
The hotel is a 727 and is reportedly known as ‘the most exclusive hotel suite in Costa Rica’.

“We have refurbished a vintage 1965 Boeing 727 airframe, which, in its prior life, shuttled globetrotters on South Africa Air and Avianca Airlines (Colombia),” explained Costa Verde’s own site.
The plane even boasts two bedrooms too, and the views are said to ‘make you feel like you’re flying’.
This hotel isn’t even the most impressive use of an old Boeing plane, though; there’s even reportedly one underwater.
In fact, in Bahrain, a Boeing 747 was supposedly sunk to create an artificial reef as part of an underwater theme park – cool, right?
Old Boeing planes have also been turned into restaurants in the US, ready for enthusiasts to enjoy dinner among aviation history.
The Airplane Restaurant in Colorado Springs is an example of this, with the huge Texas plane proving popular.
Boeing planes have achieved many milestones, even though it retires 700 jets a year
Even though Boeing reportedly retires hundreds of jets every single year, the company has still managed to impress and achieve many milestones.
For example, it’s not just simple journeys that the planes are undertaking, as a Boeing 747 became a flying wedding venue when an aviation YouTuber got married mid-air.
Plus, there’s even a five-engine Boeing 747 that’s among the rarest aircraft ever built, and it has a specific role to play.
Which use of the retired jets is your favorite?
We’d certainly enjoy staying in a plane in the jungle.
