Elon Musk has said the second-generation Tesla Roadster will go into production next year and has made some pretty exciting claims about the car.

The second-gen EV has been a long time coming – with Tesla boss Musk unveiling the prototype back in November 2017.

At the time, the car was slated to go into production in 2020, with a starting price of $200,000.

Tesla boss Elon Musk said the new Roadster is coming soon

Of course, four years on, we know that didn’t turn out to be the case—and the car has yet to start rolling off the production line.

However, in a Q2 2024 Earnings Call, Musk told investors that the second-generation Roadster will finally be available from next year.

“We’ve completed most of the engineering,” Musk said

“I think there are still some upgrades we want to make to it, but we expect to be in production with Roadster next year.

“It will be something special.”

Special is right – at least if the claims Musk has previously made turn out to be legit.

In February of this year, Musk said the new car would be capable of doing 0 to 60mph (95km/h) in under one second.

Yep – you did read that correctly – less than one second.

In a post on X – the social media site he owns – Musk responded to a follower who asked him if the new Roadster was aiming for a time of around one second to hit 60mph, to which he replied: “0-60mph < 1 sec, and that is the least interesting part.”

That is a bold claim indeed.

But as for it being the ‘least interesting part’, well, he may be on to something – because in a 2018 post, Musk suggested that the car may even be able to fly

“SpaceX option package’ for new Tesla Roadster will include ~10 small rocket thrusters arranged seamlessly around car,” he said. “These rocket engines dramatically improve acceleration, top speed, braking & cornering.

“Maybe they will even allow a Tesla to fly …”

Of course, the billionaire may have been speaking tongue-in-cheek but this isn’t the only time he’s made such a claim.

We’ll just have to see.

Responding to a gif of the DeLorean hovering above the ground, Musk wrote ‘the new Roadster will actually do something like this’.

When asked if he was joking, he was quick to say, “I’m not.

“Will use SpaceX cold gas thruster system with ultra high pressure air in a composite over-wrapped pressure vessel in place of the 2 rear seats.”
