This 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera owned by Jerry Seinfeld, just sold for about $30,000-$40,000 above market value.
The car is rare, but that’s not the reason behind that price tag.
Obviously, Seinfeld’s ownership played a part.
But there’s something else that also played a part in its desirability.
The Jerry Seinfeld ‘tax’
Seinfeld, like Jay Leno, is a revered car collector.
If you buy a car previously owned by Seinfeld, there’s the celebrity factor, but also the collector factor.
That generally drives up the price.
Even in the case of this Porsche 911.
This sold well over market average, partly because of the ‘Seinfeld provenance,’ but also for another important reason.

There was another factor that made this Porsche 911 Carrera so desirable
The fact that it was owned by Jerry Seinfeld certainly helped, but there’s another reason why this car sold on Bring a Trailer for $172,000.
We should start by explaining why rarity isn’t that important here.

This car is rare (only 300 units), but it is still relatively inexpensive by these standards.
Last year, an example with 55,000 miles on it sold for $78,500.
That’s cheaper than most new Porsches.

Even in excellent condition, 1989 Carrera 25th Anniversary Edition models usually hammer between $100,000 and $140,000.
But this one sold for a premium, thanks in large part to its exceptionally low mileage.
Beyond the famous owner, the car also came with the G50 5-speed manual gearbox and, more importantly, 11,000 miles on the odometer.
This just goes to show that when it comes to the auction world, mileage is still crucial, regardless of who owned the car before.
