This Kansas mechanic just found out the ‘unbelievable repair bill for his 2008 Audi R8.

He was left blown away by the staggering sum.

The update was the latest in an almost year-long restoration project.

Although it could be very bad news for the mechanic.

Kansas mechanic stuck with problematic 2008 Audi R8

David Long is the Kansas-based mechanic in question.

Better known as the Car Wizard on YouTube, he is the proud owner of a 2008 Audi R8.

The supercar was originally bought by Tyler Hoover of Hoovie’s Garage last year.

This ‘Iron Man’ spec R8 was eventually traded to Kansas mechanic Long as part of a deal.

Since then, he has been trying to work out the best avenue of attack with this vehicle.

Unfortunately, he received some very bad news.

The Kansas mechanic’s 2008 Audi R8 had three major problems.

First, leaking magnetic ride shocks, which are a classic R8 failure.

The shocks were completely blown, leading to leaking fluid and a ruined ride quality.

Next was an A/C compressor failure, which is even worse because it requires the removal of the entire engine.

Last up was the issue of frame cracking, a fairly common problem in early models, where the front strut towers can crack.

So next up was the repair process to get this car fixed.

To fix the A/C compressor, the 4.2-liter V8 had to be dropped from the car.

The Kansas mechanic took the opportunity to do other maintenance while the engine was out, including a new clutch and addressing oil leaks.

The next port of call was a major suspension overhaul.

Instead of spending more than $5,000 on magnetic shocks that could fail again, the Car Wizard opted for aftermarket coilovers to ensure more reliability.

Last is the topic of structural issues, which are (of course) essential to the safety of driving this R8.

A full check was conducted of the frame for the dreaded cracks, and the Kansas mechanic discussed the maintenance/repairs needed to keep the car right.

Car Wizard blown away by the cost

Now came the truly unbelievable part – the cost.

Between the A/C compressor, clutch kit, suspension components, and seals, the parts ran into the $10,000–$15,000 range.

Then there is the factor of labor costs to consider.

The removal of the engine alone took 40-50 hours.

Standard shop rates of $150-$200 made this worth about $8-10,000 by itself.

The Car Wizard estimated that, for a normal customer to take this car into a garage, it would cost around $30,000.

This worked out at nearly half the total value of this 2008 Audi R8.

The video ended as something of a warning tale to anyone looking for budget supercars.

Because there really isn’t one.
