The Hello Kitty airport in Kunisaki, Oita Prefecture, is a dream come true for fans of Japan’s most beloved cat.
The Sanrio spectacle can be found in the whole airport, not just limited to a cute corner of a terminal.
Officially dubbed the Oita Hello Kitty Airport, it’s been transformed to celebrate the lead-up to Expo 2025 in Osaka.
But why this airport?

Well, the airport is only a short ride away from Harmonyland: the Sanrio theme park that inspired this whole transformation.

While some Japanese parks are going global, like this Dragon Ball theme park in Saudi Arabia, Harmonyland is keeping the Sanrio experience localized.
A special shuttle connects the airport to the park from August to October.
It’s the ultimate two-for-one experience for Sanrio fans.
You can land at the Hello Kitty airport, hop on the bus, and spend the day with My Melody, Cinnamoroll, and more.

Of course, no Hello Kitty airport would be complete without exclusive merchandise.
The terminal shops are stocked with goodies like themed keychains, stationary, tote bags, and tee shirts.

It’s all part of the charm, and part of the reason fans are flocking to Oita.
Unfortunately, this Hello Kitty revamp isn’t permanent.
The themed airport will stay that way until Oct 13, 2025, which is the end date of the World Expo.
Whether you’re flying in to see the Sanrio spectacle, to visit the expo, or to check out an exclusive underground car club, the Hello Kitty airport is a reason to smile.

With Japanese airports having a reputation for basically never losing your luggage, you can be sure that your Hello Kitty souvenirs will be safe.
So, if you want to get your fix of Hello Kitty in a unique setting, you know where you need to go.
Hurry up though, because it’s all coming down before the end of the year.
