Lamborghini’s first EV – the Lamborghini Lanzador – may not be an EV after all, as the carmaker appears to be eyeing a U-turn.
The Lamborghini Lanzador was unveiled during Monterey Car Week in 2023.
It was set to be the first-ever EV production car from the luxury automaker.
But now the Lanzador’s future is unclear.

Lamborghini’s first EV might not be an EV
In recent weeks, it seems as though Lamborghini has had second thoughts about its electrified future.
Last month, the carmaker said it plans to keep making gas-powered cars for as ‘as long as possible’.
Fast forward a few weeks, and Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann said that an all-electric version of the Urus had been pushed back in favor of a next-generation plug-in hybrid model.
“We want to have a new generation again as a plug-in hybrid,” he told Auto Car this month.
“This is something very important for us and for the customers. And they were very happy to hear about this.”

Now, it seems Lamborghini’s first EV might be facing a similar outcome.
The marque had already pushed the launch of the Lanzador, from 2028 to 2029.
But during a recent interview with CarExpert, Winklemann said the Lamborghini Lanzador may be released as a plug-in hybrid rather than the all-electric vehicle that was planned.
He said the company had recently made two decisions based on how the electric car market was going.
“The first decision is that Urus replacement would be, again, a plug-in hybrid, and that we postpone the launch of the fourth [model],” he said.
“We have to decide whether we go one way or the other very soon, but today is still… It’s possible [that it is a plug-in hybrid], but it’s something which is still very open.”
The CEO went on to say that it was important for Lamborghini to ‘be there when the people are ready to buy these things’ rather than right from the beginning.
Lamborghini wants to make gas-powered vehicles as long as possible
It seems Lamborghini is happy to take its time when it comes to launching its first EV.

In June, Lamborghini’s chief technical officer, Rouven Mohr, said the marque was hoping to hold on to ICE vehicles for as long as it could.
“If you speak about the future of combustion for sure, for us, we are aiming to continue as long as possible,” Mohr said.
“We still think that we have a lot of ideas to transport, let me say, the combustion future.”
Mirroring Mohr’s words, Winklemann told CarExpert the company plans to keep internal combustion engines in its two flagship supercars for as long as regulations allow.
