Manhattan’s concrete jungle just got a brand new edition, the world’s skinniest skyscraper – Steinway Tower.
Remember when the Eiffel Tower in Paris (300m/984ft) was the tallest building in the world? We don’t, but it once was.
That was such a long time ago that New York City alone has 18 skyscrapers that are taller.

The 485m tall Steinway Tower is built on a concrete frame, using a former Steinway & Sons (hence the name) store as a base.
The $2 billion construction is the third tallest building in the city (and in the Western Hemisphere) and has a height-to-width ratio of 24:1.
The Steinway Tower, also known as 111 West 57th Street, is a residential skyscraper located in Midtown Manhattan and it looks even taller than it is because it is extremely thin: just 18 metres in width.
The tower was designed by SHoP Architects, a NYC firm, and developed by JDS in partnership with Property Markets Group and Spruce Capital Partners.

SHoP’s Founding Principal Greg Pasquarelli said they wanted to “[replace] any preconceived notions that our team had about skyscrapers of New York City with an opportunity to do something that had never been done before.”
The 84-story building includes 60 apartments and they’re all available starting from $7.75 mln for a studio and $66 mln for the penthouse.
And while not many buildings aim to be the world’s skinniest skyscraper, there’s a huge amount of clout if it’s the world’s tallest. Check out the top 5:
Tallest buildings in the world
- Burj Khalifa (Dubai) – 828m
- Merdeka 118 (Kuala Lumpur) – 678.9m
- Shanghai Tower (Shanghai) – 632m
- Abraj Al-Bait Clock Tower (Mecca) – 601m
- Ping An International Finance Centre (Shenzen) – 599.1m
