If you ever wondered what sort of wild features lurked inside a bodyguard’s vehicle, today is your lucky day.
Friederich GmbH is a German manufacturer specializing in body and vehicle construction.
One of the company’s specialties is specialty armored vehicles used by heads of state for security reasons.
Case in point, this Volkswagen T5 Transporter, built to be used in a motorcade of a world leader.

Taking a closer look at the features of this bodyguard’s vehicle
This T5 Transporter was used for the Russian presidential protective service during Dmitry Medvedev’s tenure between 2008 and 2012.

The interior is all about flexibility – the seats all rotate and slide along rails inside the vehicle, allowing bodyguards to face each other or the doors as required.
Sliding doors allow agents to quickly exit while the vehicle is moving at slow speeds.
One thing that sets this apart from your standard armored car is that the windows can be quickly opened and closed.

This is so that guards can return fire if necessary – but hopefully they wouldn’t have to.
In fact, the T5 Transporter isn’t fully armored, and prioritizes mobility over passive protection.
It certainly breaks with our popular imaginations of what a bodyguard’s vehicle would look like.
And the T5s weren’t even the first vehicles that Friederichs provided for Russia.
“The T5 vans took over for the earlier Transporters that were used during [Boris] Yeltsin’s time,” a source told Autoweek.

“But those older Volkswagens weren’t as numerous in the 1990s, with the FSO [Federalnaya Sluzhba Okhrany/Federal Protective Service] mostly using several different G-Wagens from BINZ at the time.
“The Volkswagens were ordered in a larger batch by the mid-2000s, becoming the main bodyguard vehicles in Medvedev’s motorcade, playing the same role as the stretched G-Wagens but being more user-friendly with a larger interior and a lower center of gravity.”
When it comes to world leaders, security is everything with their vehicles
For world leaders, security is everything when it comes to modes of transportation, whether it be cars or planes.
For the Pope, his Pope Mobile has to be ultra-safe, as demonstrated by this design proposal which included anti-drone protections.
The US Presidents also have to travel with the upmost guarantee of safety – even having their own blood type on hold in their car.
And it’s just not physical security that is of primary concern – Air Force One needs to be airtight on security, and doing so with this gifted Boeing 747 will be a tall and expensive order.
