Turning up to a driving test after no formal lessons would rattle most learners, yet this run left the driving instructor genuinely surprised.
What followed was not the disaster many would expect.
From the moment the test began, the learner focused on staying calm and sticking to the basics.
While the supervising driving instructor might have braced himself for the worst, he remained quiet for much of the drive, only stepping in to give directions as required.

He still made a number of small mistakes during the driving test
The route covered a mix of conditions designed to challenge any candidate, including residential streets with parked cars, a busy roundabout, and a stretch of higher-speed road.
According to instructor Pin Binning, the learner’s road positioning and mirror checks were consistent, two areas where inexperienced drivers often struggle.

The biggest surprise came during the maneuver section, where the candidate completed a reverse parking exercise with minimal correction.
Of course, the learner didn’t drive perfectly.
When approaching a busy roundabout, he slowed down a little too much, waiting for a larger gap than necessary.
After exiting a turn, his indicator also stayed on for a couple of seconds longer than needed.
However, none of these were dangerous mistakes.

Not needing lessons doesn’t equate to not needing preparation
While the learner’s performance with zero lessons was undoubtedly impressive, Binning emphasized that skipping lessons isn’t a smart shortcut.
Structured training builds habits that are difficult to pick up alone, particularly hazard perception and defensive driving.
In this case, the learner had spent months practicing with his father, which gave him the experience he needed.
He also studied the road rules carefully and reviewed common test routes in advance, proving that preparation was still needed.

Binning later explained that confidence, preparation, and a calm attitude can sometimes outweigh the number of paid hours behind the wheel.
Still, he emphasized that this outcome is the exception, not the rule.
Most learners benefit greatly from formal instruction, especially when it comes to complex traffic situations and emergency responses.
By the end of the test, the tension in the car had eased, replaced with cautious optimism.

In fact, when the learner asked if he needed additional lessons with a driving instructor before his real test, Binning said they weren’t necessary.
While the traditional path remains the safest bet for most new drivers, perhaps it’s not impossible to ace your driving test with no formal lessons.
