An adventurer from Saudi Arabia drove his Toyota Hilux thousands of miles across Europe to fulfill a dream he’d held for years – seeing the Northern Lights.
Instead of booking a flight, he set off from Riyadh and spent nearly three weeks behind the wheel crossing more than 20 countries.
The ambitious road trip eventually brought him to the snowy landscapes of northern Norway.
His reward was finally seeing the Northern Lights dancing across the sky in person.
A Toyota Hilux owner from Saudi Arabia crossed 23 countries
For many travelers, chasing the Northern Lights starts with a plane ticket, not jumping into your car.
But Saudi driver Malik Al-Sultan decided there was only one way he wanted to make the journey: by driving his trusty Toyota Hilux all the way from Riyadh to the Arctic Circle.

The trip was years in the making.
According to Malik, the idea first came to him in 2017 while visiting Switzerland with his family, after spotting a vehicle with Gulf registration plates so far from home, he began wondering just how far he could drive himself.
Eventually, he turned that curiosity into reality.

Setting off in his 2020 Toyota Hilux 4×4, Malik embarked on a road trip that would take him through 23 countries over the course of nearly three weeks.
The 3,728-mile route passed through Turkey, Austria, Switzerland, France, Germany, Sweden, and several other nations before finally reaching northern Norway.
Despite the extreme change in climates, from desert roads to icy Arctic conditions, the Hilux handled the challenge with ease.
Malik only made a handful of preparations before departure, including fitting snow tires with metal studs for the final leg of the journey through Norway.
The view was worth the journey
After thousands of miles on the road, Malik arrived in the Norwegian town of Rana, north of the Arctic Circle.
There, he experienced the moment he had been waiting for.

The Northern Lights appeared overhead, illuminating the night sky with vivid shades of green and red for more than 30 minutes.
“It felt like a dream,” Malik said told Arab News after finally witnessing the natural phenomenon.

While the aurora was the ultimate goal, the journey itself became just as memorable as the destination.
Driving across dozens of borders, adapting to different terrains, and navigating some of Europe’s most remote roads turned the adventure into far more than a sightseeing trip.
For Malik, taking the long route from Saudi Arabia proved that some experiences are worth every mile.
