A car enthusiast drove his beloved 1970 Plymouth Superbird from Indiana to Alaska and back twice in just six years.

For those less familiar with US geography that’s roughly a distance of around 6,041km (3,837 miles) between the two states.

Bob Jennings, from the Jennings Wing Cars YouTube channel, first took the epic journey back in 2015.

Not quite content with completing the Herculean task once, he redid the journey – in the same Superbird – in 2022.

The Superbird was taken on an incredible journey

While many classic car owners prefer to use their vintage vehicles only for short drives—or keep them off the road altogether—Jennings has shown that older cars are still capable of big trips.

Sure, it may not be as efficient as some more modern cars – like the Guinness World Record-holding Toyota Prius

But who wouldn’t fancy hitting the Alaskan Highway in a car as stunning as a 1970 Superbird?

“When I bought one many years ago I set as a goal that maybe one day we’ll drive this car across the Alaska Highway because no one had ever done that,” Jennings told Stellantis North America in 2015 after completing the first trip.

On that occasion, Jennings spent seven days racking up 8,383km (5,209 miles) traveling from his hometown of Jeffersonville, Indiana, to Anchorage in Alaska and back.

The trip allowed him to take in some beautiful sights as he soaked up the scenery, but for other road users, it was the Superbird that caught their eye.

“I watched a couple do a U-turn and follow me for 20 miles until I stopped for gas so they could take pictures with the Superbird,” Jennings said.

The car hit some snags during the second attempt

But his more recent trip, in 2022, didn’t go quite as smoothly.

The poor Superbird got a thorough drenching in Alaska leaving it water-logged and playing havoc with its electrics.

Jenning was forced to whack the heating up while driving in an attempt to dry the car out.

Nonetheless, Jenning pushed on but soon noticed things felt a little bumpier than usual and discovered that the nut holding the front right shock absorber in place had fallen off somewhere en route.

Even with the bumpy ride, Jenning continued on – racking up hundreds of more miles – but decided to use his Dodge Ram tow truck to give his Superbird a well-earned rest.

Getting home, Jenning admitted that he and his Superbird won’t be taking on the challenge of the Alaska Highway ever again.

Jennings went on to say that he had ‘misplaced confidence’ in the vehicle but still urged others to break out their comfort zones when it comes to driving their classic motors.

Now, he’s leading by example with a recent clip revealing he plans to take his 1970 Black Ice Superbird to the Arctic.

This could be one to watch out for.
