The man who owned the first Ford Mustang accepted an incredible deal from Ford after the company made several offers to repurchase it.

Stanley Tucker was an airline pilot for Eastern Provincial Airways, but he’s best known as being the first person to own a Mustang.

Quite a historic claim to fame.

While it wasn’t something that was easy to part with, everybody has their price – and Ford offered up a good deal to him for him to return it.

This first Mustang hit the showroom floor on April 17, 1964, but it’d been advertised for weeks beforehand.

The car in question was one of 180 pre-production cars, made to ease Ford into full production and to appear in every dealership prior to the launch.

Mustang Serial Number One wound up in St John’s, Newfoundland, Canada.

On April 13, Stanley Tucker had been driving past the dealership when he saw a crowd gathering around.

After seeing what all the fuss was about, he concluded he wanted to buy the car.

The following day, he walked into the dealership, where he found they weren’t too keen to part ways with it.

Tucker managed to convince the salesman to make it available three days early, with a written check on the spot.

And that’s how this pilot became the first Mustang owner in the world.

“For a long time, I was the only Mustang owner in Newfoundland. It was quite an experience,” Tucker recalled.

“Many times another motorist would force me to the side of the road to ask me about the car – what it was, who made it, how I like it, and how much it cost.”

But that raises the question – how on Earth did Ford buy the priceless car back from him?

The price that Captain Tucker was willing to accept

It was in the winter of 1965 when Ford approached Tucker with a deal.

This wasn’t the first time the company had tried to buy the car back – but he hadn’t gone for any of its previous deals.

With 10,000 miles on the clock, it didn’t look like Tucker had any plans to part ways.

But Ford presented him an undeniably good offer – the car being returned in exchange for a 1966 Mustang with any options of his choosing.

Ultimately, he went for a Silver Frost Ford Mustang convertible with a TV set placed in the dashboard.

Ironically, he still managed to land himself with a historic car, as this was the 1,000,000th Mustang ever produced.

The first Ford Mustang now resides at the Henry Ford Museum.

We can’t think of a better place for the car to be.

There are a lot of impressive car museums out there, including the Petersen Automotive Museum and the Rolling Thru Time Auto Museum.
