This man took all of the oil out of his car and took it for a drive to predictably painful results, in what could be fairly described as bringing a car lover’s worst nightmare to life.
British TV presenter Tim Shaw presented the motoring show Fifth Gear back in 2008.
During his stint on the show, he took part in an experiment in which he drove a car without any oil in it,
If you’re already wincing at the thought of that, brace yourself because it doesn’t get any prettier from hereon in.

Driving a car without oil is a car lover’s worst nightmare
At the time of the episode being recorded, ‘one in five cars’ in the UK had dangerously low levels of oil.
This seems to be part of a wider trend, with one 2010 survey finding that 49 percent of UK cars were either low or dangerously low on oil.

And with 28 percent of drivers admitting they’d never checked their car’s oil level, that equals a lot of issues.
It’s no wonder the AAA said that one in five engine failures were caused by a lack of oil.
A more recent survey from 2022 put that figure at 40 percent.
Why is oil so important to an engine?
As Tim Shaw explained, oil serves three main functions – lubrication, which prevents metal parts from grinding; cleaning, to remove debris; and cooling, to transfer heat away from the engine.
With no oil in his car, his engine loses the ability to lubricate and cool, leading to overheating.

Sure, the ‘Check Oil’ light will flash up at some point, but when it gets to that stage, it’s effectively game over.
The engine seized up, and the car broke down.
When he looked under the hood, Shaw found that the engine had ‘welded itself together’.
That’s not good.
Getting an oil change can cost you a lot
Shaw cited a statistic that 25 cars were ruined in this way every day in the UK.
This drives home the importance of oil checks.
Oil is crucial in keeping a car ticking over, but oil changes can be pricey.

It varies depending on what type of car you have, but plenty of car owners have spoken out about the budget-busting bills that have come their way.
This Bugatti Veyron owner was shocked to be charged $20,000 for her change.
While an Aston Martin owner was hit with an eye-watering bill for his Vantage.
Don’t let your oil dip too low, or you could be paying for it big time down the line.
Sure, nobody likes shelling out money for some oil, but it’s a whole lot cheaper than an engine rebuild, speaking of a car lover’s worst nightmare.
