Man takes 69 rides in a Tesla Robotaxi to put it through stress test to try and break it

This guy took 69 rides in a Tesla Robotaxi in Austin, Texas, to see if he could ‘break’ it.

His idea was to try and test the Robotaxi to the extreme and find out what’s what.

Not only did he take 69 rides, pretty much back-to-back, but he also tried to make it increasingly difficult by picking tough routes.

And the result was surprising.

The idea behind this test

YouTuber AI DRIVR decided to stress-test the Tesla Robotaxi by taking 69 rides, one after the other.

He did it partly to prove that the Robotaxi could do that without issues, but also to see whether the system could somehow learn from previous rides in real time.

Interestingly, it worked exactly the way he predicted and hoped for.

The Robotaxi managed to avoid traffic and handle heavy rain, and, more importantly, it learned from its mistakes.

For example, in one of the early rides, the car entered a drive-thru backward, but then it never did that again.

How does Tesla Robotaxi compare to Waymo

Tesla Robotaxi and Waymo are similar, and yet at the same time, they’re also different.

For starters, the only place where both are available at the time of writing is Austin, Texas.

Tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee tried both, and he said they’re broadly similar even though he believes that Waymo is slightly better, for now.

More importantly, Tesla and Waymo are employing totally different strategies to achieve the same goal.

Tesla, like Xpeng, is adamant that the camera-only approach is the way to go.

By contrast, Waymo is using a combination of cameras and LiDAR, a more sophisticated radar that can also create 3D maps of what it ‘sees’.

Time will tell whether the camera strategy is better than the LiDAR strategy.
