Did you know that a man once traded his fiancée for an actual McLaren F1 supercar?
It’s an incredible story that starts at the very top of the company itself.
A company executive sold the car to a private owner back in the day.
And the man ultimately traded his fiancée for the McLaren F1; and he had no regrets!

Chassis No. 3 was owned by a legend
Today’s story is a remarkable tale of a romance that wasn’t.
And it comes with a McLaren F1 at its epicenter.
The story in question comes courtesy of the VINwiki YouTube channel.
And it concerns arguably the greatest supercar ever built.
Presenter Ed Bolian kicked off the video in Maggie Valley, North Carolina.
He was there for the 2025 McLaren F1 owners’ tour event.
The meet involves a group drive through the Great Smoky Mountains.
And yes, as you have probably guessed, it involves quite a few McLaren F1s.

But there is one McLaren that stood out among the rest.
And that car just happens to be chassis no. 3.
The reason this one is so cool isn’t just because it’s one of the first ever made.
It is also because it comes with an absolutely incredible backstory.
So, what is so special about this McLaren F1 – and the story around it?
Well, chassis no. 3 started its life with an incredibly special owner.
And that owner was McLaren boss Ron Dennis.

Mr Dennis’ wife hated chassis no. 3; particularly the way it was specced.
So, Mrs Dennis insisted that Ron Dennis switch to a Magnesium Silver McLaren F1.
Ron Dennis duly obliged, later taking chassis no. 50 instead.
Dennis owned this example from 1994 to 1996, using it mostly for press appearances and the like.
Its most famous run out was at the 1995 Goodwood Festival of Speed Hill Climb.
It rocketed up the track, further cementing its place as a legend of the supercar world.
One woman used the McLaren F1 for a very different reason
This F1 was sold to an owner in Japan before eventually returning to the US, where it remains today.
But what about this story of a man picking the car over his fiancée?
That’s where the Japanese chapter of this story starts.
Ron Dennis sold this McLaren F1 to a Japanese buyer.
But the buyer was actually a woman who was the mother of a son.
And she actually used this McLaren F1 to bribe her son to break off his engagement.
Perhaps to the shock of few, the bribe worked – and the son cut off his engagement to his fiancée.
The man seemed to enjoy his supercar for a number of years before selling it to its current US buyer.
Who said romance is dead, eh?
