After winning a Pontiac Aztek on Survivor, the man who won the car had an interesting proposition made to him following a call from the manufacturer.

Survivor is an American reality TV show in which a group of people has to survive in an isolated location, finding their own food, shelter, fire, and more.

Between seasons two and 14 of the show, a product placement challenge saw winners be rewarded with a new car, although ironically, the winner of the challenge never won the show outright.

One man, Colby Donaldson, won a Pontiac Aztek on the show, and Pontiac called him up with a proposition once the cameras had stopped rolling.

This is how Donaldson won the Pontiac Aztek

Donaldson won his Aztek after completing one of the show’s various challenges.

This was even though a carabiner on the rope course malfunctioned, leaving him hanging.

Following that, Donaldson would spend a night in the Pontiac Aztek, as it could convert into a tent on wheels.

Awkwardly, the TV show had sent his mom out to meet him.

At the time, he didn’t have a girlfriend or partner.

But that didn’t bother him, as he was happy to see his mom again, and he had just won a brand new car.

“I was fortunate to win the Aztec because I could never up to that point have afforded a brand new vehicle,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

Following the show, the story of the Pontiac Aztek didn’t end with Donaldson simply driving off with the SUV.

What Pontiac offered Donaldson after the show aired

After Survivor aired, the Dallas Pontiac dealership wanted to make a big deal about him winning the Aztek.

Donaldson was happy to go along with it, but he had a plan.

With the Aztek hugely unpopular in America, he wanted something else.

“Okay, you’re not only a Pontiac dealership, but you’re also a GMC dealership. Can I trade this thing in for a GMC?” he said to them.

They agreed to trade it for a GMC Yukon Denali, but with a catch.

The dealership offered him a fraction of what the car was worth to trade it in.

This, despite the fact that it had zero miles on it.

In the end, he took the deal and kept his Yukon for around five years.

Not long after that, Pontiac rang up asking if he would endorse the car.

They had parking lots full of the SUV that they could not sell.

Donaldson agreed, providing they had a Burt Reynolds-style 1977 Bandit Trans Am they could offer him!

Not wishing to take the money and endorse a car he didn’t like, he turned them down.

Ironically, the Aztek became a cult icon on Breaking Bad, even though production ended in 2005.

It would seem Pontiac couldn’t even give away the Aztek.
