A British man was lucky enough to win a brand-new Porsche 911 Turbo worth $102,000, but decided to give it up to help his family.

Introduced back in 1964, the Porsche 911 is a true icon that needs no introduction.

Over the years, Porsche has produced over a million units, and the car has won more than its fair share of awards.

But when Michael Barton won one in a competition, he decided to give it up, for a very good reason.

He made the tough decision to give up the Porsche 911 Turbo

Most of us can only dream of owning a Porsche 911, but that dream became reality, albeit briefly, for Michael Barton.

He won himself a brand-new Porsche 911 for just 6p (around eight cents) through online competition site Best of the Best.

As you can imagine, Michael couldn’t quite believe it when he was surprised at work with the news.

“Nothing like this ever happens to me,” he said as he was shown the stunning red Porsche 911 Turbo.

He even hopped into the car to see how it felt and admitted that it ‘felt like a bit of me’.

However, Michael has a sensible head on his shoulders, and with his partner currently pregnant, he decided to turn down the flashy new Porsche in favor of a more selfless alternative.

Instead, he took the cash alternative of £75,000, around $102,000, to help him and his growing family get their very first home.

Well, let’s face it, you’d struggle to get a car seat into a Porsche 911 anyway, wouldn’t you?

And that’s before we get to the hidden costs of ownership.

How to get your own Porsche 911

If you fancy getting your own Porsche 911, but you’ve not been lucky enough to win one, like Michael, one car enthusiast has created a handy calculator to help you work out if you can afford it

The online tool, named What Car Can I Afford, pretty much does what it says on the tin.

You pop in some details about your dream car, like a Porsche 911, for example, and whether rim, year, and whether or not you’d like a loan to finance it, and – ta dah – it’ll tell you how much you need to earn to make the dream a reality.
