DIY Ferrari 308 rebuild hits a smokey issue
The old-school straight-lined Ferrari 308 might not be every gearhead’s pride and joy, given that its aesthetic is stuck in time, but for many older heads, this is a car that is an era-defining gold mine.
As the car is often discovered wrapped up in barn finds, it often serves as an amazing restoration project.
Previously, we’ve seen them be brought back to life in masterful DIY rebuilds, and that is exactly what YouTube personality Ratarossa is doing.
Documenting the process on his channel, the man recently hit a massive issue on his Ferrari 308 rebuild, though, which saw smoke stream out of the exhaust in an unhealthy manner.

To little surprise, this was no ordinary issue and stemmed from something being rather iffy in the engine room.
With it requiring a more masterful touch, the man was forced to bring in the experts, and the problems went from bad to worse.
RE Performance, the experts in question, immediately identified that the V12 engine had a number of leaking cylinders from years of wear and tear.
Usually, anything under five percent leakage is acceptable, but the Ferrari was suffering up to 20 percent in some of its oily columns.
This all means that the engine will need to undergo a lengthy restoration, ruling out a quick turnaround and easy profit.
What’s next for the project?
Well, the first issue is the engine restoration, and this means shipping it off with the experts to get the cylinders drained and tightened up – a job not as simple as it sounds.
Then, its onto the aesthetics. The man was toying with the idea of a fresh paint job, but after being convinced that the stock two-tone option was best, he’s now looking to get the bodywork all polished up.
With hope, the engine will come back ready and raring to go, and this Ferrari 308 rebuild can join esteemed company on the roads.

The Ferrari 308 rebuild project is one of many, but it’s turning out to be one of the more successful restoration stories for this fabled car.
