When this California YouTuber traded in van life for living in a Mazda Miata – AKA one of the smallest cars on the market – he didn’t think it would be this hard.
You may be thinking, ‘How could he have expected it to be easy? He’s living in a small car’.
But this goes beyond the car’s size – there was a more pressing issue at hand.
Take this man’s story as a cautionary tale.

What happened when this man moved into his Mazda Miata?
YouTuber mellow_conner has taken on his fair share of car exploits in his time online.
He spent four months modifying his Honda S2000, but his Miata has been a focal point.
This was his family car, but it had become something of a poor relation.

He’d put in a lot of work into fixing it up, and had even taken it out on a road trip.
Now out in Tennessee, Conner had grown accustomed to sleeping inside the car on his travels.
Sure, it was saving him money that would have otherwise been spent on hotels – roughly $1,500 a month – but it came at a cost.
It wasn’t so much that the car was small, although that certainly wasn’t ideal.

The primary issue was that the 31-year-old soft top leaked.
So if he was unfortunate enough to be sleeping in it on a rainy night, he could expect to wake up in some damp conditions.
Therefore, a tarp had to be placed over the top of the car in order to spare the interior.
There’s also a lot of noise to contend with, whether that’s other vehicles or high wind.
It’s no wonder that he’s taken to using tissues as earplugs.

And security is also a concern, given that the soft top can easily be cut open with a knife.
Whenever he leaves the car, he takes all items of value with him.
With all of this being taken into account, you might be questioning why he keeps camping out in this car.
To quote the man himself: “It’s a special car.
“Things don’t always have to be easy. In fact, the easier things are, the more boring things are.”
Some cars are better suited for camping out than others
Some vehicles are better kitted out to be slept in than others.
Take the Tesla Cybertruck, for example – this couple slept in theirs in freezing temperatures, and it did a solid job.
One man compared his Cybertruck directly to an electric RV to see which was superior for roughing it out in the wild.
Then there was the couple who honeymooned in their Model Y as they drove it across Europe.
It can be done – just make sure your vehicle doesn’t have a leaky roof like this Mazda Miata.
