When this woman took a McLaren for a test drive, she asked a routine question and was given a blunt answer by the salesman.

It can be intimidating to deal with car dealers.

And it’s understandable – it can feel daunting to interact with someone with so much expertise.

If anyone knows how tricky the dynamic can be, it’s this TikTok creator who took a McLaren out for a drive.

The customer-car dealer relationship isn’t always the smoothest

Car dealers and customers share a curious relationship in the short time they interact.

It’s obviously a business transaction, but one side is putting an awful lot of trust in the other.

Nobody wants to find themselves at the mercy of a opportunist, like Mr. Wormwood in Matilda.

The vast majority of interactions are positive – just take a look at this salesman who was praised for his response when a woman admitted her boyfriend told her to return her Toyota.

But things can go sour, as Shaquille O’Neal can testify to.

You may recall that the former basketball star bought two cars just to spite a cars salesman who asked an ‘annoying question’.

This woman’s routine question about a McLaren ended in a brutal response

TikTok creator Julia shared a video online of her test driving a McLaren.

What would have presumably started as a standard drive took a potentially awkward turn.

“What is the MPG on this?” she asked.

“If you have to ask, you can’t afford it,” the salesman replied.

Ouch.

Put some aloe vera on that burn.

Fortunately, Julia had a sense of humor about his response, and the two cracked up laughing.

“You just clocked me,” she remarked.

“That’s honestly what I say,” the salesman replied.

The on-screen text indicated that this response had take her by surprise: “Getting humbled while test driving a McLaren was not on my agenda today.

“I was NOT expecting that response.”

This is the internet after all, so there’s a lot of variables.

She may have genuinely been taken aback by what he said, or it may have been a joke between two people on the same wavelength when it comes to humor.

At any rate, people watching the video certainly had a lot to say about the interaction.

How did the internet react to the salesman’s harsh answer?

As you might expect, a fair few people took issue with the salesman’s response, and sounded off about it in the video’s comment section.

“He’d never say that to a man,” one person fumed.

“Even if I had McLaren money, that man wouldn’t get any of my commission,” another wrote.

As the saying goes, ‘You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar’.

All salespeople should bear that in mind, no matter how expensive the car they’re trying to sell is.
