A mechanic was going to work on a 1968 Mustang GT 390 4-Speed.
But this ended up being so much more than just a repair job.
The mechanic in question took a look around the car before getting to work.
And he realized that this 1968 Mustang GT 390 4-Speed meant so much more.

Bullitt made Mustang GT 390 an icon
People of a certain age might have heard of a little movie called Bullitt.
If you’re under the age of 40, then allow us to explain.
Bullitt is widely considered to be one of the best car movies ever made.
It stars the iconic Steve McQueen as San Francisco detective Frank Bullitt.
And Frank Bullitt’s weapon of choice was the Mustang GT 390 4-Speed.

The Highland Green Mustang GT390 is the star of arguably the greatest car chase ever filmed.
And it quickly cemented the Mustang GT 390 4-Speed as an eternal legend.
It is one such car (though sadly not the same as the movie car) that stars in today’s story.
The team behind the My Dirty Garage YouTube channel recently got a call.
And the call concerned a very special Mustang GT 390, although the team didn’t realise how special it was yet.
Mechanic reunited with his past in the best way
When his friend called him, the man had no idea that he was about to be reunited with a car from his past.
After giving the car a look over, he realised that the original inspection stickers were there from when he’d last worked on this muscle car in his twenties, decades before.
Everything was still intact, as if it were a time capsule waiting to be revived.
The owner (an old friend) had done what he could to keep it in fighting shape.
But, as with many of these stories, life often gets in the way of things.
So, what lies beneath the surface of this icon?

Under the hood sits a masterpiece – the 390-cubic-inch FE V8 paired to a four-speed transmission.
What’s even more fascinating is that this engine has a pair of 428 Cobra Jet heads.
One detail that we love is that this car won’t be repainted.
This faded Maroon Mustang, in a way, tells its own story – and looks just as good, too.
The plan for the team is to perform a complete overhaul in order to get it in fighting shape again.
It will be rock-solid and roadworthy – the way the owner remembers and loves it.
Stories like these are the reason why we love cars in the first place.
They remind us that cars are so much more than just machines; they are meaningful chapters in our lives.
We would love to see this Mustang GT 390 hit the streets once again.
