This veteran mechanic explained that you’ve been using jack stands incorrectly and there’s a method that you should actually be using.

When fixing a car, jack stands are used to keep the vehicle safe and in place when raised.

But there are varying methods of using the apparatus, and after one mechanic shared his solution, he said it’s important to take the step to keep safe.

Other car enthusiasts had differing opinions, sparking a debate.

You’ve been using jack stands all wrong says veteran mechanic

When you need to secure your car in place and diagnose or fix a problem, jack stands are usually used.

The apparatus helps to keep things safe and sturdy, but one man has insisted that you’ve been using them all wrong.

Veteran car enthusiast and expert, My Mobile Mechanic, shared how he thinks you should be handling the equipment.

“If you’ve ever had a jack lose pressure and you witness the car drop on a stand, sometimes that stand will tilt, slide, move, etc. And then it’s coming down and killing you,” he said.

So, he showed why you should back up a jack by using the jack stand under it.

With the weight of the vehicle pressing down, this stand can never tip, move, or slide. It’s locked in place, meaning you’re gonna live,” he explained.

He says he originally shared his method a year ago, and other people have since taken it on, too, this time explaining why it is vital to be safe.

According to BendPak, the stands must be placed ‘directly under the lifting point’.

“There should be enough room at every jack point to accommodate the stand’s grip. When releasing hydraulic pressure from the floor jack, a properly rated jack stand will hold the weight of the car as long as the stand is flat,” stated the company.

But not everyone who saw the tip that the mechanic shared agreed.

Online, other people had differing opinions

“That’s not the way I usually jack up a car, I use the cables,” one user said.

“If you’re rotating tyres, you would need multiple jacks instead of one; not everyone has that kind of money,” said another.

“Much safer than using jacks alone. Good tip,” commented another person.

Other mechanics have also taught us some handy tricks in the past, too.

One mechanic shared a vital warning sign that shows you should sell your car as quickly as you can, alongside another that issued a warning of a noise from that engine that could signal a problem with your car.

It is recommended that you enlist trusted guidance before taking on a task like this to ensure you are safe.
