A car mechanic has revealed the crucial warning sign that could mean it’s time to sell your vehicle before it costs you thousands.
While many drivers ignore early symptoms of mechanical issues, one specific sound should set off alarm bells.
According to veteran YouTube mechanic Scotty Kilmer, a strange noise from your transmission might be more than just a quirk, as it could be a sign of serious trouble ahead.
If you’re hearing it, it might be time to let go of your car before it breaks down completely.

Don’t ignore the crucial warning sign
In a recent video, Kilmer explained that odd noises from your automatic transmission, like clunks, jolts, or hard shifts, may indicate that the gearbox is failing.
And in the world of car repairs, few components are more expensive to replace than the transmission.
“If your transmission starts clunking when it shifts, now’s the time to get rid of it,” Kilmer warned.
He used the example of a 4×4 with a smooth-running engine but a gearbox that occasionally delivers a harsh jolt between gears.
Kilmer isn’t alone in this assessment either, as other mechanics agree that even a little engine noise could mean a major problem with your car.
While it might be tempting to ignore this crucial warning sign, especially if it doesn’t happen every time you drive, Kilmer says that’s a mistake.
Transmission failures can happen suddenly and come with enormous repair bills, which may even exceed the value of the car itself at times.

That’s why Kilmer urges owners who spot this crucial warning sign to consider selling the car before a total breakdown occurs.
Honesty is the best policy
However, he was quick to stress that honesty matters.
“Just make sure you let them know what they’re getting into,” he said, acknowledging the ethical dilemma of selling a car with known issues.
Many viewers agreed, pointing out in the comments that hiding a major fault like this from a buyer isn’t just shady, but potentially dangerous.
However, some also pointed out that with car prices rising drastically in recent years, it may still be cheaper to fix the problem rather than get another car.
And of course, if you’re a seasoned mechanic, there’s nothing stopping you from turning a $400 junkyard car into something that runs smoothly, so do consider your options.
